You are reading the story of a little bay mare -- one of many horses -- involved in an animal neglect case in Upper Michigan. The county prosecuted the owner and they were successful with a guilty verdict and as part of the sentence; all horses were taken away from the individual. Jill McDermott ended up with 16 of these animals. Thankfully all the horses were in good body condition but they lacked in all other cares. She took it upon herself to have all the animals vetted including coggins, vaccinations and boosters, dental care, deworming, and farrier care.

Veterinarian Dr. Linda Michalski estimated this mare to be about 6 years old. Though she lacks a pedigree, she is clearly an Arabian, and likely purebred. Journey stands a quarter inch over 14 hands and weighs 780 lbs.

Jill chose to give these horses a future by sponsoring a Trainer's Challenge. I was invited to participate in the Challenge, and that is where I come into the mare's life.

This mare is one of a few horses in the herd that was not registered, thus she was nameless and subsequently labeled "Horse 10". I chose to name her Journey the moment I seen her.

Journey came to me virtually untouched besides her vet and farrier care while with Jill... She seems to be halter broke and loads ok, but she had to be tranquilized to have her feet trimmed, was nearly impossible to catch and not fond of human companionship.

Watch this mare take a Journey from a meaningless life with an unknown fate to becoming a dependable riding horse. ...A horse with a future.

Check out the Trainer's Challenge page for more details... Journey will be available for adoption in a silent auction on August 14th.
